Frequently Asked Questions

Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts that capture the natural aromatic compounds, flavors, and beneficial properties of their source plants. They’re obtained through methods like steam distillation, cold pressing, or solvent extraction from flowers, leaves, bark, roots, or other plant parts.

Always dilute essential oils with a carrier oil (like coconut, jojoba, or almond oil) before applying to skin – typically 2-3 drops of essential oil per teaspoon of carrier oil. Never ingest essential oils unless under the guidance of a qualified healthcare professional. Keep them away from eyes, inner ears, and sensitive areas. Perform a patch test before widespread use, and store oils in dark glass bottles away from heat and light.

Most essential oils should not be applied undiluted (also called “neat”) to the skin, as they can cause irritation, sensitization, or allergic reactions. A few oils like lavender are sometimes used undiluted in small amounts, but dilution with a carrier oil is generally the safest approach for topical application.

Essential oils are natural products derived directly from plants and contain the authentic chemical compounds of the source material. Fragrance oils are synthetic or partially synthetic compounds created in laboratories to mimic certain scents. While fragrance oils may smell pleasant, they don’t offer the same properties as pure essential oils.

Store essential oils in dark glass bottles (amber or cobalt blue) in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight and heat. Keep bottles tightly sealed to prevent oxidation. Properly stored, most essential oils last 1-3 years, though citrus oils have a shorter shelf life of about 6-12 months.

Use extreme caution with children and pets. Many essential oils are not safe for infants and young children, and dilution ratios should be much lower for kids than adults. Some oils are toxic to cats, dogs, and other pets. Always consult with a pediatrician or veterinarian before using essential oils around children or animals.

Some essential oils should be avoided during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester, as they may affect hormone levels or uterine activity. Always consult with your healthcare provider before using essential oils if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding.

Carrier oils are vegetable-based oils used to dilute essential oils before topical application. They “carry” the essential oil onto the skin safely while also providing their own nourishing benefits. Common carrier oils include sweet almond oil, coconut oil, jojoba oil, and grapeseed oil.
